The Vegums Multivitamin: A Nutritionist’s View on it

Hi there! I’m Gina, a qualified Nutritional Therapist and blogger based near Manchester. Vegums have asked me to sum up my thoughts on their vegan Multivitamin, of which I have had the pleasure of trying myself. I’ve followed a vegan diet for over 4 years now, and have been a big fan of Vegums since I discovered them around a year ago (they’re also completely plastic-free, which is a HUGE win).

The Vegums Multivitamin gummies are tailored specifically to compliment a vegan diet, containing those nutrients which are more difficult to obtain through eating purely plant based. They’re also made with real strawberry juice (the key to that delightful flavour!) and a pinch of cane sugar. They’re also perfectly suitable for children over 3 years.

Following a poorly planned vegan diet puts you at risk of deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals. The main way to avoid this is to increase your intake of whole plant foods (think lots of veggies, fruit, wholegrains, legumes and pulses), consume fortified foods, and lastly, through supplementation. Below I have outlined a few of the main nutrients that the Vegums Gummy Bears contain and their importance.

If you don’t already know, Vitamin B12 is the most important nutrient that vegans should be concerned with, and studies show that those following a vegan diet are commonly lacking in this important nutrient. B12 is vital for the health of your body’s nerve and blood cells, and can’t be obtained through a vegan diet, making supplementation important.

Vitamin D is another important vitamin, of which the body usually forms through sunlight. However, due to our lack of sunlight in the UK, supplementation is now recommended throughout the winter months. Vitamin D is also more difficult to obtain through a vegan diet, with the main sources being animal products. This vitamin aids the absorption of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, helping to maintain healthy bones and teeth, making it super important!

Iodine is an essential mineral involved in the production of thyroid hormones. The amount of Iodine found in plant food is variable, making supplementation a potentially viable option for vegans. Vegums contain the UK’s daily recommended intake for iodine.

Whilst supplements are not a quick-fix or replacement for a nutrient-dense diet, the Vegums Multivitamin gummies are a great supplement to consider on a vegan diet, containing the specific nutrients that vegans should be conscious of, all packed into one yummy gummy.
